Maria Elena "Maya" B. Herrera, FASP, PhD


Ms. Maya Herrera is President and Chief Actuary of Solutions Incorporated. 
 
She has been in the risk management, actuarial services and compensation and benefits consulting field since 1989.  Her particular fields of expertise are strategic benefits planning, total compensation design, managed care, employee communication and actuarial services.
 
Ms. Herrera is also currently an Associate Professor at the Asian Institute of Management, where she is core faculty of the Executive Education and Lifelong Learning Center (EXCELL). She is also Research Director for the AIM Ramon V. del Rosario, Sr. Center for Corporate Social Responsibility. She is Program Director of the Institute’s Strategic Finance, Finance for Senior Executives and Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Programs.
 
Her fields of current study and research include: corporate strategy, enterprise risk management, corporate social responsibility, governance in family corporations, health policy and finance, entrepreneurship and innovation. 
 
Prof. Herrera has been in the research and training field since 1992. She provides technical advice as well as facilitation, training and executive coaching services. Her primary geographical areas of research, training and consulting are South East Asia, India and China.
 
Prof. Herrera has served as Treasurer of the AIM Scientific Research Foundation (AIM-SRF), the Institute’s endowment arm, and has held the post of Chief Financial Officer of AIM.
 
Prior to joining Solutions, Ms. Herrera was the Chief Financial Officer and Actuary of the Manufacturer’s Life Insurance Company’s Philippine office. She was practice leader of the health care, group and risk management practices of The Wyatt Company (Philippines) – now Towers Watson. In this capacity, she was also involved in retirement plan consulting and assisted many companies in establishing their retirement plans.

She has held general management posts in other industries including computer software, personal care manufacturing and marketing.
 
Ms. Herrera holds a PhD in Organization Development (2009) from the South East Asia Interdisciplinary Development Institute, a Master’s degree in Actuarial Mathematics (1982) from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics (Cum Laude, 1981) from the University of the Philippines.
She is a Fellow and former President of the Actuarial Society of the Philippines and has served in various capacities in its Board of Governors.
 
Ms. Herrera's published work includes contributions to local and international publications, scholarly articles, practitioner references and popular articles. She is the primary author of “Towards Strategic CSR: A Manual for Practitioners.” She is a contributing author to several books including “The World Guide to CSR” and “Doing Good in Business Matters.” Her published work covers the areas of leadership, strategy, risk management, corporate social responsibility, innovation, family corporations and health policy. 

She writes the column “Integrations” for The Manila Standard Today.
